The Manoir de Mathan in Crépon was a private residence for many years before being completely renovated in 2008. It now offers 21 rooms, some on the ground floor with views of the park and/or the charming square courtyard. The hotel grounds extend to a country lane and include a small pond protected by a wooden fence. In the park, a bread oven resembling a small stone house and an old wine press, which lend a bucolic charm to the place, were once used for daily life. Rest, the beauty of the surrounding landscape, and moments of relaxation define life at the Manoir de Mathan.

A bit of history
on the grounds of the Manoir de Mathan
Having been enlarged several times since its initial construction, the triangular pediments adorning the entrance doors date its original construction back to the 17th century, 1605 to be precise. With its solid wood beams, exposed stonework, and furniture sourced from antique shops around Bayeux, this manor house cultivates the charm of its unique architectural setting, typical of this part of Calvados, particularly the Bessin region.
The fiefdom of Mathan – in Calvados, Normandy – was under the King's jurisdiction, and the Manor of Mathan remained the property of the Hue de Mathan family until the 19th century. From the late 17th century onwards, the main building was doubled in length, a new wing was added to connect it to barns, sheds, and stables, and then the roof was raised, resulting in the three distinctive buildings arranged around a square courtyard and a charming hotel in Normandy that now comprise the property.
Arcisse de Caumont (1801-1873) was a French historian and archaeologist, considered one of the pioneers of medieval archaeology. He lived at the Mathan manor in Crépon, Calvados, where he conducted extensive research on Norman heritage. Founder of the Society of Antiquaries of Normandy, he contributed to preserving the history and architecture of the region.
Beautifully renovated with fine materials such as cut stone and slate, the Manoir de Mathan boasts a simple yet elegant façade with subtly projecting pilasters and triangular pediments. Each section of the hotel is accessed via several stone staircases, providing easy access to the rooms and suites. The hotel's interior décor is refined, featuring exposed beams, wrought-iron railings, and antique furniture sourced from vintage shops, reflecting a sense of authenticity and attention to detail that ensures memorable stays and weekends in Calvados.
